Meaning: des. of a weight and (usu.) of a coin, `stater' (IA.); στατῆρες as opposite of ἀποδοτῆρες `returner' (Epich. 116), after Et. Gen. = χρεῶσται, `debtor', prob. prop. "those who weigh themselves (the money)", cf. ὀβολο-στατήρ (Hdn. Gr.) = ὀβολο-στάτης `obol weigher, usurer' (Ar. a.o.; cf. Fraenkel Nom. ag. 1, 48).
Compounds: As 2. member with themat. vowel enlargement in bahuvrihicompp., e.g. δεκα-στάτηρ-ος `concerning ten st.' (Arr.), -ον n. `sum or weight of ten st.' (Att. a. Cret. inscr.).
Derivatives: στατηρ-ίσκος (-ισμός?) des. of a tax (pap.), -ιαῖος `worth or weighing one st.' (Theopomp. Com., hell. a. late).
Origin: IE [Indo-European] [1004] *steh₂- `stand'
Etymology: To ἵστημι in the sense of `put on the balance, weigh off, to', so prop. "the weigher" like ἀναστα-τήρ `who drives away, destroyer' (A.) to ἀν-ίστημι. Further remarks (slightly diff.) by Benveniste Noms d'agent 50. Beside it, also with zero grade, but with ο-ablaut Lat. Stator, -ōris surn. of Jupiter (cf. Wissowa P.-W. 2: 3, 2227 f.); with full grade in intr. meaning Skt. sthā́tar- m. `driver of a car', prop. "who stands on the car". Lat. LW [loanword] statēr. -- Further s. ἵστημι.
